"Lourdes Reading in the Garden"
Oil on Canvas, 18" x 24" study
This is a portrait of my daughter, Lourdes Marcela Gomez, recipient of the College Board, National Hispanic Recognition Program, 2013-2014 Scholar award. Lourdes was born of a 1st generation immigrant family from El Salvador. Her father, Guillermo, spent most of his childhood moving between his Father's family newly immigrated to the US and his mother's family who remained in El Salvador during the civil war that tormented that country for more than 10 years. Crossing the border into the United States from El Salvador has brought many advantages, opportunities and prosperity to my husband's family. We are so proud of the accomplishments that our daughter has achieved through the educational opportunities that this country has to offer. She is now an honor student in the Barrett Honors program at Arizona State University. This portrait is a reminder of our daughter's love of learning and willingness to push invisible limits in order to gain opportunities.
